Sacha Baron Cohen Addresses Oscar Ban In ‘Dictator’ Character

Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen issues ultimatum, promises ‘unimaginable consequences’ if Academy refuses to lift ban.
By John Mitchell

Sacha Baron Cohen finally addressed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to ban him from attending Sunday’s Oscars, releasing a video and calling in to “Today” as Admiral Gen. Shabazz Aladeen, his character in the upcoming film “The Dictator,” to promise “unimaginable consequences” if he is not permitted to attend.

Baron Cohen was initially invited to this year’s Oscars because he appears in one of this year’s Best Picture nominees, Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo.” The actor’s in-character appearance was intended by Paramount to generate publicity for the film, a tactic with which the Academy apparently took issue. Purists believe such promotion is inappropriate, as the Academy hasn’t even allowed advertisements for films to run during the Oscar telecast until this year.

“Good morning, great Satan of America. How are you? I am fine, thank you. On behalf of the nation of Wadiya, I am outraged at being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Zionists,” Gen. Aladeen said in a video address posted to the Republic of Wadiya website.”While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences. … On top of all of this, I paid Hillary Swank $2 million to be my date and she will not refund a penny. My Sunday calendar is now as empty as a North Korean grocery store.

But whatever happens, I still plan to attend director Brett Ratner’s afterparty, since it is impossible to catch herpes twice. Death to the West. Death to America. And good luck, Billy Crystal. You’re fantastic.”
At the video’s conclusion, in a likely statement on what Baron Cohen believes inspired the Academy to ban him from attending in character, he concludes the video by saying, “How was that? Did I sound crazy enough?”

This morning, during a call-in interview on “Today,” Cohen-as-Aladeen declared, “Normally I would be impressed by an act of cowardice by a faceless regime. But this is personal.”

This isn’t the first time Baron Cohen has been shunned by the Academy after declaring his intention to show up in character. In 2007, Baron Cohen was asked to be a presenter but said he would do it only if he could be in character as Borat, the fictitious Kazakh journalist he played in the blockbuster film of the same name. Oscar execs said no, and Baron Cohen did not attend the awards — though he was not officially banned from attending the ceremony.

The actor also appeared in character as Bruno, a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter, at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. During the ceremony, the actor, dressed as an angel with his buttocks exposed, landed in the lap of Eminem, spurring the rapper to storm out of the ceremony. It was later revealed that the stunt was rehearsed.

Taylor Swift Gets Prom Invitation From New Jersey Teen

Kevin McGuire is in treatment for leukemia, and his sister is trying to score him a date with Swift.

Taylor Swift has a closet full of sparkly, flowing dresses that would be the envy of any girl searching for just the right look for prom. But the singer who spent her prime prom years touring the world has mostly had to assuage her high school dance jones with a headlining gig on MTV’s 2008 show “Once Upon a Prom.”

But now, instead of sharing her big night with 40 dates and the cameras, Swift has gotten an invitation from a Somerdale, New Jersey, high school senior who is hoping she’ll make his dreams come true.
According to ABC News affiliate WPVI, 18-year-old Sterling High School football player Kevin McGuire’s sister has started an Internet petition on his behalf asking the country-pop superstar to stand by her brother’s side.

McGuire, who is receiving treatment for a relapse of the leukemia he was diagnosed with five years ago, is getting dating assistance from his big sister, Tori, who decided to try to lift his spirits after he fretted that he might not be able to get a date once his hair fell out from chemotherapy treatments. “I said, ‘What if I got Taylor Swift to go to the prom with you?’ ” she said she asked her brother. “His eyes lit up for the first time since he was diagnosed.” As a bonus, the prom falls on Kevin’s birthday.

So Tori set up the “Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!” Facebook site, which as of Friday (February 24) morning had more than 77,000 followers.

“All throughout Kevin’s treatment he kept his character intact, remained playing basketball, and even started varsity football as a freshman,” she wrote on the Facebook page. “Kevin is known throughout the community as the High school’s ‘real life SUPER MAN!’ Tragically, Kevin had a relapse, and is now fighting cancer for the second time.
Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could even fathom meeting, and throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned ‘why me?’ Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin’s day more than Taylor Swift. Kevin DESERVES more than anyone a special event in his life. And the one thing he wants is to GO TO PROM WITH TAYLOR SWIFT!
Let’s make this happen people! TAYLOR PLEASE GO TO PROM WITH KEVIN!!!!!! NO ONE DESERVES IT MORE!”

A Twitter hashtag, #teamkevin, has also become a trending topic, with a number of celebrities hopping on the bandwagon, including Perez Hilton, Travie McCoy, reality star Teresa Giudice and sports giants including Michael Vick, Alex Rodriguez, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith.

Swift’s spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time and the singer had not yet reacted to the invite on her Twitter feed.

But many Facebook friends have weighed in on the latest public request for a celeb to accompany a civilian to a public event, including Bernadette Scullin, who wrote, “May your dreams come true!” and Cecelia Denny, who joked, “C’mon Taylor, don’t be ‘MEAN!’ ”

Lady Gaga Responds To Born This Way Topping ‘Pretentious Albums’ List

‘Eye roll,’ Gaga tweets after music mag NME blasts her latest LP.
By James Montgomery

Earlier this week, British music mag NME set out to determine the “10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever.” The list includes (genuinely pretty terrible) conceptual fare like Kiss’ Music From “The Elder,” Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music and, uh, Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way, which somehow bested all competitors to nab the #1 spot.

How? Well, as NME writer Priya Elan wrote, “On Born This Way, [Gaga] seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy ‘anthems’ that couldn’t mask the fact that the fun had left the building.” Elan singled out the thumping “Scheiße” as BTW‘s most pretentious moment, adding, “Did electroclash die for this?”

Snap. As you’d probably expect, those jabs had Gaga’s Little Monsters on the offensive, and they launched an all-out attack on Elan in the comments section of NME‘s website. But Gaga herself remained above the fray — for a while, anyway.

On Thursday night, she took to her Twitter account to hit back at NME, a publication that’s certainly been no stranger to charges of pretentiousness over the years.

“Oh the irony of winning ‘Most Pretentious Album Ever’ from none other than NME. *Eye roll,*” Gaga wrote. “I might laugh forever [and] then return to narcissism.”

Double snap. Having sufficiently eye-rolled her way through the situation, there’s been no further comment from Gaga about the list.

NME, of course, has since turned the exchange into a separate story, one which, for whatever reason (word count?), includes recent comments Gaga made about bulimia … and spaghetti. *Eye roll.*

20. The lost Jewish music of Moldavia – Sirba Din Saveni

We recorded musicians in northern Romania that play archaic melodies that are a prototype of the more familiar contemporary Klezmer music. They learned the melodies from Jewish musicians who lived in this region before the Second World War and are some of the last performers who know this tradition.

Oscar Lovebirds: Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez & More

From Justin and Selena to Justin and Jessica, MTV News takes a look at the hottest couples from the 2011 Academy Awards.

The Academy Awards happen to be one of the most glamorous nights of the year, filled with over-the-top acceptance speeches and crazy-expensive couture. It can also serve as the glitziest date night for some of the most famous people in the world. With this year’s Oscars only days away, we decided to take a look back at last year’s show and remember some of the most dazzling couples to hit the Oscar scene.

A very pregnant Natalie Portman took the stage on Oscars night last year to accept her prize for Best Actress for her role in “Black Swan.” In between “thank you’s” for the Academy, her family and her fellow nominees, she also thanked her main man, and the father of her son, ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied.

“I want to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to work from such an early age [and] my beautiful love, Benjamin, who has now given me my most important role of my life,” she told the room. “Most importantly, my family, my friends and my love, thank you so much.”

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez looked like the young A-listers they are when they arrived at the annual Vanity Fair Oscar party, arm in arm. The night was filled with nuzzling, schmoozing and being in love. It also served as the most high-profile appearance the two had made in their time as a couple.

Another Justin and his lady love also dazzled at the same bash. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chilled at the party, looking stunning in high-end fashion. The two may have broken up not long after the fete, but the photo remained a reminder of their often-speculated-about romance, before they got back together — and reportedly got engaged — later in 2011.

“True Blood” stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer looked like the grown-up version of Justin and Selena (both guys donned formal wear and both ladies wore blood red).

James Franco and Anne Hathaway may not have been romantically involved, but they were certainly trying their best to romance Oscar viewers as co-hosts. While Hathaway brought her high-energy theater-kid charm to the show, Franco opted for the type of charm we might expect from his “Freaks and Geeks” character Daniel Desario: low-key and a bit confused.

J.K. Rowling Signs Deal For First Post-’Potter’ Book

Author says her upcoming adult novel is ‘very different to the ‘Harry Potter’ series.’
By John Mitchell

Photo: Daniel Barry/Getty Images

It’s been five long years since J.K. Rowling published her seventh and final “Harry Potter” novel, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and it seems the author is finally ready to move away from the beloved young wizard and into the world of adult novels. Publishers Little, Brown announced on Thursday that they’d reached an agreement with Rowling to publish her first book for grownups.
The publisher did not reveal any details of the book or even when eager readers could expect its release, though in a statement through the publishing house, Rowling did seem to indicate that she had finished writing the novel.

“Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the ‘Harry Potter’ series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world,” she said. “The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.”

At the U.K. premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” Rowling told MTV News that she had been writing actively since finishing the final “Potter” book, but that she wanted the film franchise to wrap before she released anything. “I’m writing, and I’ve done quite a lot since finishing ‘Harry,’ ” she said. “I also felt I wanted the last film out of the way before I made any moves on the publishing front. ‘Harry’ is so huge and I suppose my involvement with the world has still been quite intense. This feels like a new beginning to me.”

The “Potter” series is the best-selling book series in history, with more than 450 million copies in print, and inspired the most successful film franchise ever, grossing more than $7.7 billion worldwide.
Rowling’s “Potter” books were published in the U.S. by Scholastic, which does not publish novels for adult audiences. Little, Brown will be publishing Rowling’s new novel in both the U.S. and the U.K.

Authors who have found great success in the young-adult genre have had mixed results writing for adults. “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer found success with her adult bestseller “The Host,” but she is an exception to the rule, according to the Wall Street Journal. Though the paper notes that Rowling would enter the adult genre with one distinct advantage over authors like “Lemony Snicket” scribe Daniel Handler and “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” writer Ann Brashares: Her books, like those of Meyer and “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins, achieve a large following among adults, who would in turn be more likely to trust her skills as an author regardless of genre.

“J.K. Rowling is simply a great writer, and no matter what she applies her talents to, we will anticipate and enjoy it,” Melissa Anelli, administrator of top “Potter” fansite The Leaky Cauldron, wrote in an email to the Journal. “I’m also so intrigued by this process:

What will happen as the world’s greatest children’s/YA author navigates the new publishing landscape and publishes for a new audience?”

What indeed.
